Overview

I worked within a team of three as a graphic designer and UX/UI designer to develop Airlock, a cryptocurrency wallet desktop app. The client, Block DX, contracted us over 4 months to provided UX research and insights, wireframing, prototyping and testing, and branding, creating an app that provides users with all-encompassing ‘lite multi-wallet’, muscling out the competition by offering the holy trinity of speed, security and usability.

Problem context

Cryptocurrency wallets are often riddled with complexity, and many users have been the victim of their security vulnerabilities. Users lack trust and are forced to choose between usability, security, and efficiency or juggle multiple wallets. This complexity makes it difficult for novice users to participate without a lengthy and confusing learning curve.  or understand the risks they face.

The goal

Simplify the act of engaging with cryptocurrency activity by providing a versatile and secure wallet that is intuitive and secure, allowing access to novices while catering to the needs native users.

The approach

Decoding the user

We conducted detailed user surveys with 22 respondents, chosen for their active engagement in the cryptocurrency space. These surveys included both quantitative and qualitative questions to capture a broad spectrum of information. On the quantitative side, we collected data about the technology they used, when they used it, and what for. The qualitative aspect of the survey delved into their motivations for choosing a particular wallet, their experiences, and their pain points.

Insights

  • Security was the number 1 concern and remains an issue within the crypto space

  • Users were constantly anxious about irreversible monetary losses or loss of access to their assets, due to poor functionality

  • A majority of users found current wallets difficult and unintuitive to use

  • Users were often confused about which wallets were suitable for their needs

  • Users were frustrated by having to employ multiple wallets for different coins or different functionalities

  • Users were frustrated that their wallets used highly technical terminology, and by a lack of guidance

Battle of the Wallets

In a bid to understand the current market landscape, we conducted a thorough investigation of the most popular cryptocurrency wallets. Our analysis went beyond feature comparison; we delved into user reviews and feedback to comprehend how each wallet was perceived and utilised by its users.
We found that while all the wallets under study offered some sought-after features, none of them provided a comprehensive solution. Users often had to compromise one feature for another.

This analysis reinforced our initial hypothesis: there is a palpable need in the cryptocurrency market for a solution that doesn't force users to choose between security, simplicity, safety, and user-friendliness.

Big (and little) spenders

Based on the insights gleaned from the surveys, we crafted user personas to represent our different user categories. "Eric," a Crytpo native, is a seasoned crypto trader, symbolised users who prioritised security, speed, and streamlined functionality. "Anush," representing the novice or general user, highlighted the need for safe storage, easy transactions, and a user-friendly interface.

Show me the money

Keeping the personas' needs in mind, the information architecture was crafted to address their unique and shared needs. Whether it was portfolio overviews or transaction histories, the architecture aimed to provide easy access to necessary information and tools.
